Symposium on Age Estimation Dec 2014

Symposium on Age Estimation, 9 – 11th December 2014, Oxford (UK)

This exciting symposium, organised in association with the British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology (BABAO, www.babao.org.uk), will bring together an international and interdisciplinary group of experts in different approaches to age estimation. Topics include new imaging methods to estimate age, and estimating age in the living, in forensic samples, and from skeletal remains, teeth and bones.

Lyle Konigsberg (University of Illinois, USA) Niels Lynnerup (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) Sigrid Kvaal (University of Oslo, Norway) Noël Cameron (Loughborough University, UK) Tim Cole (UCL Institute of Child Health, UK) Simon Mays (University of Southampton, UK The symposium  will be held at St Catherine’s College, Manor Road, Oxford, OX1 3UJ. http://www.stcatz.ox.ac.uk/contact/map-and-directions. It will run from Tuesday afternoon 9th December (2pm), Wednesday 10th December and Thursday morning 11th December. Registration is included in this year’s SSHB membership subscription and so is FREE for existing SSHB members (i.e. those who applied to join the Society before 1 May 2014). Registration is not included in the BABAO membership fee so BABAO members are asked to pay to attend the symposium. We hope, though, that many BABAO members will be able to attend this symposium. For non-members of SSHB and those joining from 1st May onwards, the registration fees are: Students: £75 Others (Early Bird until 31/08/2014): £150 Others (from 01/09/2014): £200 Costs include tea/coffee and served three course lunch (Tuesday and Wednesday) and tea/coffee (Thursday) and drinks reception sponsored by Informa (publishers of Annals of Human Biology) on Tuesday evening. There will be an additional workshop on Age Estimation run by Lyle Konigsberg on the morning of Tuesday 9th December. This is not included in the registration cost for the symposium, and further details can be found here.  Also not included in the symposium registration cost are accommodation and the symposium dinner on the Wednesday evening.

Dinner on Wednesday evening 10th December 2014 at St Catherine’s College, Oxford. Cost £50 – please indicate whether you would like to attend when you register.

Accommodation

En suite bedrooms in St Catherine’s College are available for Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th December at £70 plus VAT per night (£84 per person per night). Breakfast is included. Abstracts for proffered papers – deadline 31st August 2014

The Symposium will include some short proffered papers on the topic of age estimation. Those working in this area are warmly encouraged to submit abstracts. When preparing your abstract, the title should be followed by the author(s), presenting author underlined, and institution. The abstract should consist of 250 words or fewer and should state the aims, materials and methods, and the principal observations and conclusions. Please indicate whether you would like to proffer a paper when registering and indicate whether you would prefer  Poster or Oral presentation.
