CLASSIFICATION AND ESTIMATION
PERFORMANCE MEASURES IN DATA
SCIENCE
The application of machine learning methodologies, particularly in the
context of supervised learning, aims to classify individuals into
multiple categorical classes (classification algorithms) or to estimate a
continuous real value (regression algorithms). Therefore, it is essential
to assess the quality of the performed classifications or estimates,
namely whether the applied methodology can be used with equal
quality on other individuals. In this sense, some procedures and
measures commonly used in this context will be explained.

The presenter is Professor Rui Santos, Professor of Statistics at the School of Technology and
Management of the Polytechnic of Leiria, and is member of
CEAUL – Center of Statistics and Applications of the
University of Lisbon, Portugal. His research interests include
simulation, distribution theory, statistical inference,
